About our school
Základní škola Fr. Plamínkové is a state school specializing in language education. The school is located close to the city centre, has classes from 1st to the 9th grade. School uniforms have been introduced from the 1st to the 4th grade.
The majority of the extra lessons which the Framework Education Programme allows a school to use with respect to their specialization, are used for extra language lessons. Our pupils start studying English in the 1st grade with 2 lessons a week in the 1st and the 2nd grade. This is increased to 4 lessons a week from the 3rd grade on up. Students also start their study of a second European language in the 6th grade. While the school does not offer a bilingual programme it has integrated CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) into its School Education Programme. For example, arts and crafts in the 5th grade, music classes in the 6th to 9th grade and a World of Business is taught in the 8th grade among others. Thanks to this, the school appeals to pupils from foreign communities in Prague and has a number of bilingual children enrolled. However, Czech is still of paramount importance in the school.
The school also offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities as well, such as language clubs, conversation classes with native speakers, a club for bilingual children, drama clubs, music clubs, dance clubs, sport clubs and many others.
Plamínkové tries to offer the pupils a rich variety of project days (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Epihanie, Tartan Day, Pancake Day, Canada day etc.), it encourages them to take part in a number of local, regional and international competitions.
The school is a partner school of Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Education which allows the school to partake in teacher training and is also a "laboratory" for research work. The pedagogical staff also attend in-service teacher training at University as well as trainings organized by other institutions. The school's policy is to use innovative and modern teaching approaches, use of ITC in the classroom, develop critical thinking and employ project work. The school strives to create good atmosphere and relationships among all our stakeholders: pupils, teachers, and parents. The school holds the certificate Rodiče vítáni or Parents welcome.
Plamínkové is also a partner school of Erasmus for Students organization and hosts teachers who come to Prague on Erasmus + mobility. Many programs are currently running in the school such as DROK or Šablony which allows the teachers to educate themselves and help weaker students with extra lessons.
In 2016 a partnership with a French school in Cholet was established and several exchanges have been realised. Every year pupils travel abroad with their teachers to elevate their language competences and experience what life is like abroad.
In addition, each class spends a week out of school with their class teacher to enjoy the community, to build stronger group relationships through cultural excursions and sport. Favorites are Skiing camp and Cycling trips taken in the 7th and 9th grades.
At the end of their studies at our 9 graders may write a Graduate essay which allows them to focus on a selected topic and develop an in-depth academic paper or presentation which they then present in public.
